The Norwegian Nobel Institute has reiterated that the Nobel Peace Prize cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred once awarded, following remarks by Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado about offering her 2025 Peace Prize to former US President Donald Trump. The institute said its decisions are final and based on the Nobel Foundation’s statutes, which do not allow appeals or changes after the award is made.
Machado, who won the 2025 Peace Prize for her work promoting democracy in Venezuela, suggested in a Fox News interview that she might give or share the prize with Trump as a sign of gratitude for a U.S. operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Trump responded that it would be “a great honor” to accept such a gesture and said he expects to meet Machado in Washington this week.
Trump has openly expressed his interest in the Nobel Peace Prize in the past, claiming credit for reducing global hostilities and saying he believes he deserves the award. Opinions remain divided, with some seeing his role as positive and others questioning his contributions. Machado has publicly praised Trump’s actions against Maduro’s government, even as he has indicated support for interim leader Delcy Rodríguez rather than Machado’s leadership.
