Tesla To Open First India Showroom In Mumbai
|The company is currently focusing on retailing imported vehicles and has clarified that it does not plan to establish manufacturing operations in India soon.
Marking its official entry into the world's third-largest car market, Tesla will inaugurate its first showroom in India on July 15 at the Bandra Kurla Complex, a prominent commercial hub in Mumbai, according to Reuters. The move comes after years of regulatory discussions and preparations.
Tesla has imported nearly $1 million worth of electric vehicles and merchandise into India, despite the steep import duties, estimated at around 70%, and additional levies. The consignment includes six units of the best-selling Model Y, priced at $32,500 for the standard variant and $46,000 for the long-range version, alongside several Superchargers. The Model Y currently holds the position of the world's most popular electric vehicle.
In a media invitation, Tesla CEO Elon Musk referred to the July 15 launch as the opening of the "Tesla experience centre" in India. The company is currently focusing on retailing imported vehicles and has clarified that it does not plan to establish manufacturing operations in India soon. US President Donald Trump has criticised such a move, stating that setting up a Tesla plant in India to bypass high import tariffs would be "unfair" to the United States.
