Unveiling Al-Ashar: Saudi Arabia's Oasis of History along the Zubaida Trail

Riyadh: Nestled amidst the enchanting sand dunes of the Great Nafud Desert, the archaeological pool of Al-Ashar has emerged as one of Saudi Arabia's largest and most historically significant sites, serving as a key station along the renowned "Darb Zubaydah" road. Located 60 kilometers south of the historic village of Lina in the northern border region, this archaeological treasure is captivating historians and visitors alike.

Boasting an impressive array of 30 architectural units, the site catered to the needs of pilgrims, stretching across an expansive distance of up to 3 kilometers and spanning over 500 meters in width. Among its remarkable features are the remnants of palaces, houses, markets, and a rectangular pond measuring approximately 65 by 51 meters with a depth reaching about 5 meters. The Al-Khalisiya Pool, Mahdia Pool, and Al-Mutawakkil Pool serve as notable water resources within the site.

Dug between the hazms and skillfully equipped with several strainers, the pool draws water from a distance of more than 7 kilometers by ingeniously directing the flow through shabans and hazms. Its stepped design simplifies the process of accessing the water, rendering it as one of the most captivating ponds along the Zubaida trail.

In a splendid showcase of their commitment to preserving historical treasures, Saudi Arabia recently inaugurated an exhibition near Arafa, the site of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, which delves into the rich history and significance of the Zubaida Canal and its missions within Islamic history. This Ain Zubaydha exhibition aims to enlighten visitors about the remarkable contributions of the canal and its enduring impact on the region.

The Al-Ashar archaeological pool stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of the past and serves as a cherished symbol of Saudi Arabia's heritage.
