RIYADH: The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has recently unveiled comprehensive guidelines to encourage balanced and varied eating habits during the holy month of Ramadan.

The SFDA's recommendations underscore the importance of incorporating essential food groups into daily meals. Emphasizing the significance of whole grains like wheat and oats, low-fat dairy products, and a minimum of five servings of diverse fruits and vegetables, the guidelines aim to ensure a well-rounded diet.

In addition, the SFDA advises individuals to include protein-rich foods such as legumes, fish, eggs, and lean meats in their meals. This promotes necessary protein intake for overall health and well-being.

To promote healthier choices, the SFDA suggests limiting the consumption of fats and opting for small amounts of unsaturated oils. At the same time, it encourages individuals to avoid high-fat, high-salt, and high-sugar foods that can have adverse effects on health.

Recognizing the need for hydration, particularly during non-fasting hours, the SFDA stresses the importance of consuming six to eight glasses of fluids per day. This helps individuals maintain proper hydration levels throughout Ramadan.

The SFDA also advocates for informed food choices, urging consumers to carefully read food labels. By paying attention to calorie, fat, sugar, and salt content, individuals can make conscious decisions about the products they consume. Other critical information, such as expiration dates and allergen warnings, should also be considered.

To support individuals in managing their daily calorie requirements, the SFDA has introduced a calorie calculator on its website. This tool assists individuals in tailoring their food intake during Ramadan to achieve or maintain a healthy weight and overall well-being.

By following these guidelines, individuals can ensure a balanced and nutritious diet during Ramadan, promoting their health and vitality throughout this holy month
