“Money can’t buy happiness.” It’s a common saying that many people often use. Social media recently buzzed about this quote after a tweet from the world’s richest man went viral. Musk’s post on X reached 30 million users within hours.

On February 5th, Musk wrote, “Whoever said ‘money can't buy happiness’ really knew what they were talking about,” adding a sad emoji. The post received both support and sarcasm. According to Bill Ackman, American hedge fund manager and founder of Pershing Square Capital Management, Musk should appreciate himself for what he has done for many. Others called it the “biggest lie in history”. Some users sarcastically asked Musk to share his money to test the idea.

One user commented that only those who have experienced both poverty and wealth can understand the difference, adding that the saying exists to console the poor. Screenshots highlighting Musk’s wealth circulated in the comments, along with memes mocking his statement. Another user joked that the person behind “money can’t buy happiness” clearly didn’t know where to shop. One person remarked they would rather be miserable with billions than miserable without money.
