Google Adds New AI Features To Gmail
The move to give AI deeper access to inbox content has raised privacy concerns.

Google has rolled out a new AI-powered Inbox for Gmail, aimed at helping users stay on top of tasks and important updates. The update introduces AI-generated overviews in Gmail search, along with a proofreading tool designed to help users polish their writing. For now, these features are available only in English and limited to users in the United States, but Google says it plans to expand them to more countries and languages.
The AI Inbox is divided into two sections: “Suggested to-dos” and “Topics to catch up on.” The first highlights emails that need immediate attention, while the second groups recent updates that users may have missed. Google is currently offering early access to testers, with a broader rollout expected in the coming months. The new AI-powered search also allows users to ask questions in natural language and receive direct answers, reducing the need to open multiple emails.
Google says the Proofread feature is designed to improve writing by reviewing drafts and suggesting clearer wording, tighter sentences, more active voice, and simpler structure, all with a single click. This tool will be available to users subscribed to Google AI Pro and Ultra paid plans. The move to give AI deeper access to inbox content has raised privacy concerns. Google, however, says the data reviewed by these features will not be used to train its Gemini AI models.
