Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Death Toll Rises To 265
The incident also marked the first crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner

At least 265 people were killed when a London-bound Air India flight crashed in India's Ahmedabad on Thursday. The crash stands as one of India's most severe aviation tragedies in recent years. At the same time, the authorities have reportedly found one of the two black boxes of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that will help in revealing what triggered the accident.
"The aircraft crashed shortly after take-off. We regret to inform that, of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities. The sole survivor is being treated in a hospital," said Air India in a post on X on Thursday. According to a BBC report, families have been giving DNA samples to help identify the victims. The passengers comprised 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals and 1 Canadian national. The survivor, identified as Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, is a British national of Indian origin.

The 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew.

The incident also marked the first crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a twin-aisle jet used for longer routes. CNBC, citing aviation data firm Cirium, reported that the aircraft's first flight was in December 2013, and it was handed over to Air India in January 2014. As of Thursday, Air India operated 34 Dreamliners, including the crashed aircraft. Notably, more than 1,100 Dreamliners are in service worldwide. Boeing shares closed 4.8% lower on Thursday.
