Abha, Saudi Arabia: The Heritage Authority has revealed a series of remarkable archaeological discoveries at the Jerash archaeological site in the enchanting Asir region of Saudi Arabia. These findings shed new light on the architectural wonders of residential units, crafted intricately with stones and clay.

The scholarly team's excavation revealed previously unseen architectural marvels, expanding upon earlier findings from past seasons, notably on the northern part of the site.

Among the noteworthy discoveries is a groundbreaking irrigation system, unseen before at the site. A well, ingeniously constructed using the stacked stones method, took center stage, linked to water channels meticulously built with two rows of stones. A central channel distributed water to the residential units, while several other channels branched out, flowing into water basins conveniently positioned adjacent to the units. Additionally, the team unearthed fireplaces and terraces meticulously crafted with stones and clay.

Adding to the archaeological riches found, a granite stone containing a three-line Islamic inscription came to light, making it the second of its kind discovered at the site, offering valuable historical insight.

The excavation also revealed a plethora of stone tools utilized in daily life. Pestles, powders, grinders, and a diverse assortment of mills with varying sizes and shapes were discovered. Fragments of pottery, glazed ware, glass, and steatite used for the creation of pottery, glass, and stone vessels in different sizes were plentiful. Amidst the findings were a collection of dazzling beads intricately made from precious stones.

With its commitment to the cultural heritage of the region, the Heritage Authority aims to explore, document, preserve, unveil, and take advantage of archaeological sites like Jerash, recognizing their significance as both cultural and economic treasures. By protecting and nurturing this invaluable heritage, the Authority contributes to showcasing the Kingdom's extensive civilizational role.
