'Are You Dead?': Viral Chinese App to Change Its Name
The decision was taken after concerns that the original name was too directly linked to death.

The company behind the viral Chinese app known as “Are You Dead?”, designed for people living alone, has announced it will rename the platform. The app, originally called “Sileme” in Chinese, a phrase that translates to “Are You Dead?”, will be updated and relaunched under a new name. Moonscape Technologies, the firm behind the app, said the global brand name will now be “Demumu”. The decision was taken after concerns that the original name was too directly linked to death.
The app is simple to use. Users register the contact details of a trusted person and are required to check in once every two days by tapping a large on-screen button. If a user fails to check in, the registered emergency contact is alerted. When it launched in May last year, the app drew little attention. Interest has surged in recent months, especially among young people living alone in cities, turning it into one of China’s most downloaded paid apps.
The trend reflects a broader shift in China, where solo living is becoming more common. Research cited by the Chinese state media outlet Global Times suggests the number of people living alone in the country could reach 200 million by 2030. The app has also sparked discussion online. Some users say it could be especially useful for people living alone, those struggling with depression, or individuals in vulnerable situations. Others have suggested a friendlier name, proposing alternatives like “Are You Okay?” or “How Are You?”
