Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe was shot twice in the head during a campaign event in Bogota, in what authorities are calling an assassination attempt. The police reportedly arrested a 15-year-old suspect and are investigating whether others were involved.

Miguel Uribe, a 39-year-old senator, is a member of the opposition Conservative Democratic Centre party and is contesting the 2026 presidency. The incident occurred as Colombia faces a series of violent clashes between leftist rebels, criminal groups and the government. According to a party statement, the senator was addressing the supporters at a rally in the capital when "armed subjects shot him in the back". The suspected teenager was reportedly carrying a "9mm Glock-type firearm".

Uribe was airlifted to the Santa Fe Foundation hospital, where he underwent surgery and remains in intensive care. Left-wing President Gustavo Petro condemned the attack as an "act of violence not only against his person but also against democracy". The defence minister, Pedro Sanchez, has officially appointed a team to investigate the crime and announced a 3 billion peso reward for information about the culprits.

Uribe belongs to a well-known political family in Colombia. His father was a businessman and a union leader, while his mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was kidnapped and killed in 1990 by an armed group led by notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar. Footage circulating online shows the moment Uribe was shot in the midst of the speech, causing panic among the crowd.
