“Freedom Light”: IOC Independence Day Celebration Held In Salalah

Salalah: The Indian Overseas Congress (IOC), Kerala Chapter, organised an Independence Day celebration titled “Freedom Light” at the Omani Women’s Association Hall in Salalah. The event strongly highlighted the significance of freedom and the values of democracy, drawing participation from leaders of various social and cultural organisations in Salalah.

The gathering reflected on India’s freedom struggle and the current political scenario, reminding participants of the urgent need to safeguard democracy and secularism. Dr K.A. Nishtar, President of IOC Kerala, presided over the programme, while journalist K.A. Salahudheen inaugurated the session. In his address, he emphasised that in these challenging times—when democracy and secularism face serious threats—secular parties must rise above minor differences and unite.

IOC Joint Treasurer, Rizan Master, presented the keynote address. Greetings were delivered by several organisation representatives, including V.P. Abdusalam Haji (President, KMCC Salalah), Abdulla Muhammed (President, Pravasi Welfare), Ahmed Saqafi (Deputy President, ICF Salalah), Husain Kachilody (Treasurer, KMCC), Ibrahim Velom (General Secretary, PCF), Sinu Krishnan Master (Convener, Sargavedi Salalah), Rasheed Kalpetta (General Secretary, KMCC), Shasna Nisar (General Secretary, KMCC Women’s Wing), Aneesh B.V. (Working President, IOC), and Suhana Mustafa (IOC National Media Coordinator).

As a symbolic gesture, participants lit flashlights, signifying the greatness of freedom and the protection of democracy. IOC General Secretary Harikumar Ochira delivered the welcome address, while IOC Women’s Wing General Secretary Rajisha Babu proposed the vote of thanks. The event witnessed a large turnout.
