MS Dhoni To Secure Rights To "Captain Cool" Title
The phrase was previously claimed by a firm, for which Dhoni filed a rectification petition

In a move befitting his legendary composure on the cricket field, former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is now on the brink of etching "Captain Cool" not just into the hearts of fans, but into the legal record of India. Known for his unshakeable calm in the tense moments of the game, Dhoni is poised to transform his title of legacy to a brand power as the Indian Trademarks Registry advances his application toward approval.
Originally filed in June 2023, Dhoni's application to trademark "Captain Cool" under Class 41, which covers education, training, entertainment, and sporting services, was formally accepted and advertised in June 2025. The trademark was published in the Trademarks Journal on June 16, opening a 120-day window for public objection. If unchallenged, Dhoni will obtain exclusive commercial rights to the title in the domains of sports coaching, training and entertainment.
Interestingly, the phrase was previously claimed by a firm, for which Dhoni filed a rectification petition, accusing the company of attempting to exploit his widely recognised brand. After at least four hearings, the Registry ruled in Dhoni's favour. The development follows another milestone in Dhoni's career – his induction into the ICC Hall of Fame 2025 alongside cricket greats such as Australian great Matthew Hayden and South Africa’s Hashim Amla.
