Sharjah Launches Smart Traffic Signals To Improve Traffic Flow
The system not only reduces congestion, but also minimises risks from uncontrolled pedestrian crossings.

Sharjah has introduced a set of smart traffic signals that use advanced technologies, including sensors and detectors that monitor traffic volumes and adjust signal timings accordingly. With this technology, part of the "Green Traffic" initiative, the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) aims to enhance traffic flow, reduce congestion, and boost road safety.
The smart traffic signals are for smoother, more synchronised traffic, enabling vehicles to pass through multiple green lights without stopping, provided they maintain a speed between 40 to 50 km/h. The system not only reduces congestion, especially during peak hours, but also minimises risks from uncontrolled pedestrian crossings. Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of SRTA, stated that the project is part of a larger package of smart projects to strengthen the emirate’s transport sector. By adopting the latest global technologies, authority seeks to elevate road infrastructure efficiency and provide innovative solutions that support sustainability and smart urban transformation.
