The United Kingdom has appointed Blaise Metreweli as the first female chief of MI6, officially known as the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), in its 116-year history. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced Blaise Metreweli as the 18th head of the agency, succeeding Sir Richard Moore later this year.

Blaise Metreweli, who joined MI6 in 1999, brings decades of experience in intelligence and security. She had previously directed operations in MI5, spending years in the Middle East and Europe. Most recently, she served as the Director General Q, overseeing the agency's technology and innovation division, which focuses on safeguarding agents' identities and countering advanced surveillance systems, including those of China.

MI6, the UK's foreign intelligence agency, plays a key role in collecting overseas intelligence and works to prevent terroristic threats and cyberattacks with the support of its Five Eyes alliance. The Chief, usually known as "C", reports directly to the Foreign Secretary and serves on the Joint Intelligence Committee, which advises the Prime Minister on global security matters. The title "C" originates from the sign of Captain Mansfield Cumming, the first head of the Secret Intelligence Service. Metreweli's appointment comes amid increasing concern over hostile activities from Russia, China and North Korea, which are reportedly strengthening their cooperation to challenge the UK's interests.
