George Clooney, his wife Amal, and their two children have been granted French citizenship, according to the French government. The decision was published in the Journal Officiel, which records official government decrees. The family’s main residence is a farm in Brignoles, southern France, which the couple bought in 2021.

Clooney told RTL radio that despite frequent travel, France remains the place where his family feels happiest. Clooney has been publicly critical of Donald Trump in the past. The actor has previously praised France’s strict privacy laws, saying they protect his children from paparazzi and media attention, particularly around schools. He has said he wants to spare them the pressure faced by other celebrity children.

While promoting his film Jay Kelly, Clooney joked that his French is “horrible”, even though his wife and children speak it fluently. He said he has tried to learn the language on his own using an app.

France’s Interior Ministry did not disclose details about the family’s eligibility. However, the Associated Press reported that the Clooneys completed a rigorous process that included security checks and interviews. French law allows naturalisation through several routes, including for individuals considered capable of providing what the government describes as “important services to France”.
