Oman Releases Employer Guidelines To Safeguard Workers From Heat

Oman's Ministry of Health has released new directives for safeguarding workers from summer heat hazards. The ministry also stressed that employers should adhere to the recommendations, which are part of the 'Safe Summer' campaign.

Oman recently announced a ban on outdoor work during peak midday hours from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm to protect workers from heat-related risks. This rule will be effective until the end of August. As part of the guidelines, employers should schedule strenuous tasks during early morning or late afternoon hours. They must provide frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, allowing a break every 45-60 minutes when working in hot environments. Additionally, it is essential to ensure hydration supplies are available and to install air conditioning units or fans in indoor workspaces.

It is also essential to train workers to recognise heat stress symptoms and respond appropriately. Employers are also required to daily monitor the temperature and humidity of the worksite and implement an emergency plan for a heat stress emergency response.
