India has initiated a new digital addressing system called DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) designed to provide precise location-based addresses across the country. Each DIGIPIN is a unique 10-character alphanumeric code representing a specific 4m x 4m grid in India.

Developed by India Post in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, the DIGIPIN system uses latitude and longitude coordinates to assign addresses, replacing the postal address method that relies on broader areas such as locality, street, and house number. Unlike traditional PIN system, which can be vague in rural or densely populated areas, DIGIPIN enables highly accurate location tagging - especially beneficial for online shopping, logistic services and emergency cases.

Major online platforms like Amazon and Flipkart can integrate this new system, which enhances accuracy and speedy deliveries. As the DIGIPIN system expands into more fields and is integrated with GIS system, it may significantly reduce the need to use conventional local addresses in the future.
