FIFA will consider a proposal to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams. The expansion is to mark the centenary of the prestigious tournament. The idea was reportedly raised at a recent meeting of the FIFA council. The tournament has already been expanded from 32 to 48 teams for next year's edition.

A FIFA spokesperson told Reuters that the proposal was raised by a FIFA Council member during the council meeting held on March 5. "The idea was acknowledged as FIFA has a duty to analyse any proposal from one of its Council members," the spokesperson added. The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be held in Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. Meanwhile, centenary matches will be played in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. It is for the first time the tournament is being played across three continents. The tournament began in 1930 in Uruguay's capital, Montevideo, with teams from just 13 nations taking part.
