Regulating the Delivery Sector: New Rules in Saudi Arabia Increase Opportunities for Saudis

Riyadh: The delivery sector in Saudi Arabia is undergoing significant changes as new regulations, aimed at enhancing efficiency and safety, go into effect. Non-Saudis in the sector are now required to strictly limit their work to licensed apps and wear a uniform while on duty. The first phase of these regulations, which went into effect on Monday, is part of a wider plan to gradually confine the job to Saudi nationals over a 14-month period.

The Transport General Authority (TGA) of the kingdom has implemented these rules to ensure the proper regulation of the rapidly expanding delivery sector. Non-Saudis are now obligated to work in the sector exclusively through licensed light transport companies. Conversely, self-employment opportunities within the delivery sector are available for Saudi nationals.

To further enhance safety and trustworthiness, the new regulations also require delivery companies to activate a face-verification feature for their drivers, utilizing a system directly linked to the TGA. Additionally, coordination with Saudi traffic authorities has been established to outline specific conditions regarding the use of motorcycles for delivery services.

The updated rules also permit the use of light transport vehicles for advertising, provided there is coordination with the Ministry of Municipal and Village Affairs. This expansion of opportunities serves to support businesses within the sector by utilizing advertising capabilities effectively.

By upgrading efficiency and strengthening safety measures, the new regulations aim to elevate the delivery sector as a vital component of the Saudi Arabian economy. The TGA spokesperson, Saleh Al Zuwayed, emphasized that creating more job opportunities for Saudis is a key objective, as the delivery sector plays an important role in the kingdom's economic landscape.

Saudi Arabia currently has 37 licensed companies operating in the delivery sector, and last year witnessed over 200 million delivery operations, underscoring the sector's significant growth. As the sector continues to evolve, regulatory measures aim to prioritize trustworthiness, safety, and the creation of multiple employment opportunities for Saudi nationals.

The implementation of these regulations aligns with the government's commitment to supporting economic sectors and promoting job opportunities for its citizens. The delivery sector's regulation and optimization contribute to the nation's overall economic development, fostering trust and reliability among stakeholders.
