Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre has conceded defeat early Tuesday.

Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal Party has won Canada's federal election and is set to form the new government. However, it is not clear if the party will be able to secure a majority in Parliament, as counting of votes is still underway. If Mark Carney fails to secure a majority, he will need coalition partners to govern. Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre has conceded defeat early Tuesday.

"As I’ve been warned, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country. But these are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never, that will never ever happen," said Canada's Prime Minister in his victory speech. It is worth mentioning that the Liberal Party was struggling in the opinion polls three months ago, but the situation changed when Mark Carney took over the leadership. Carney, who became prime minister in early March after Justin Trudeau's resignation, is now set to continue in the role. World leaders, including British PM Keir Starmer, have congratulated Carney on his victory in the election.

Current vote counts show the Liberals with 43.1% of the national vote and the Conservatives with 41.7%. Meanwhile, compared to four years ago, both parties reportedly saw a substantial increase in their national vote share. The Liberals, who last won a majority in 2015, relied on the New Democratic Party to govern after winning the 2021 election with 160 seats. A party is required to secure 172 of the House of Commons' 343 seats to form a majority government in Canada.
