Meta Platforms has begun test-launching ads on its social media platform, Threads. According to Meta, ads will show a “Sponsored” label when they appear in a feed, and early tests will be image ads. With the new ads experiment, Meta is likely aiming to transform Threads into a potential advertising powerhouse.

"To ensure we find the right balance of content people see on Threads, we will monitor this small test closely to see how it’s going before rolling out ads in Threads more broadly," said Meta in a blog post on Friday. Notably, the company also mentioned that the users will have controls for ad topics, and they can also report ads. "For example, if people see an ad they don't like, they can skip the ad, or tap the menu on the post to hide or report it," Meta added.

Threads was launched in 2023 to compete with Elon Musk-owned X, formerly known as Twitter. The company said in December that the platform had 100 million active users. Reports also indicate that Threads was the most downloaded non-game app on a launch day in the past decade.
