'Tesla Not Interested In Manufacturing In India': Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy
Central government has notified the guidelines to promote domestic manufacturing of electric cars
India's Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy said on Monday that Elon Musk-owned Tesla is "not interested in manufacturing in India". The minister also said that the EV giant is only keen to set up showrooms in the country. At the same time, the central government has notified the guidelines to promote domestic manufacturing of electric cars.
"Tesla...they are only to start showrooms. They are not interested in manufacturing in India," the minister said at a media briefing, as quoted by NDTV. Meanwhile, Kumaraswamy mentioned that European firms like Hyundai, Mercedes Benz, Skoda and Kia have shown interest in manufacturing units in India under the new EV policy.
In February, US President Donald Trump said that if Tesla were to build a factory in India to circumvent that country's tariffs, it would be "unfair" to the US. During an interview with Fox News, Trump said it is "impossible" for Musk to sell a car in the South Asian nation.
