The White House said on Thursday that US President Donald Trump is suffering from a chronic vein condition. The 79-year-old president underwent an evaluation for leg swelling and has received a diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency. Concerns about President Trump's health, often rooted in photographic evidence circulating online, prompted an official clarification designed to dispel the unsupported rumours.

Chronic venous insufficiency, also known as CVI, is a condition that occurs when veins have trouble moving blood back to the heart. The Cleveland Clinic states that, although the condition may initially cause only mild symptoms, it can affect quality of life and result in serious complications as time goes on. Photographs from the Club World Cup soccer final in New Jersey last week showed the president with noticeably swollen ankles, which intensified health speculation concerning Trump. Internet users reportedly speculated that the US administration was attempting to conceal a health crisis.

Karoline Leavitt, the White House spokeswoman, said that President Trump's leg swelling was due to a common vein condition. Leavitt also noted that his bruised hand was consistent with 'tissue damage' caused by extensive handshakes while he was taking aspirin. The White House has released the letter from a US Navy officer who is Trump's physician. Donald Trump underwent an extensive medical evaluation with vascular testing, and the letter confirmed he showed no indications of heart failure or systemic illness. The physician further described it as a common condition, especially among individuals over the age of 70, adding that the US president's health remains excellent.

Donald Trump has consistently boasted about his excellent health, even going so far as to reportedly declare himself the healthiest president in history. He was 78 years and seven months old when he started his second term in January, making him the oldest president to begin a term in the history of the United States. Former President Joe Biden was diagnosed in May with aggressive prostate cancer that had spread to his bones. At that point, Trump said he was “surprised” that the public had not been notified about Biden’s diagnosis “a long time ago.” The timing of Trump’s medical report release is significant, as in recent months, President Trump has ramped up accusations that Joe Biden and his staff engaged in a systemic cover-up of Biden’s own health challenges.
