Zohran Mamdani Takes Office With Major Challenges Ahead

Among Mamdani’s most talked-about campaign promises was his commitment to freeze rents for the city’s one million rent-regulated apartments.

Zohran Mamdani's rise to New York City mayor comes with a number of historic breakthroughs. He's the first Muslim and South Asian to take the role, was sworn in using a Quran, and at his age, he's the youngest mayor the city's seen in more than 100 years. The 34-year-old democratic socialist has stepped into what's often called the second-hardest job in America. With Mamdani now in charge, he is responsible for a city of about 8.5 million residents. He also leads New York’s largest workforce, managing roughly 300,000 full-time employees, 72 agencies, and more than 200 boards and commissions.

Zohran Mamdani faces several challenges in the months ahead as New York City mayor. Within his first month in office, Mamdani must present a new budget for the year starting July 1, 2026. But with federal funds being cut and the economy facing strain, coming up with money for new plans may not be easy. The city must balance its budget, but it’s facing a growing shortfall. Rising prices from tariffs could make things even tougher, adding to the challenges New Yorkers already face with the high cost of living. Experts and city budget monitors say New York’s economy is losing momentum and growing more slowly than expected.

Among Mamdani’s most talked-about campaign promises was his commitment to freeze rents for the city’s one million rent-regulated apartments. The rent freeze is a key part of Mamdani’s broader effort to tackle housing and affordability. His plan also includes building 200,000 new affordable homes over the next decade and increasing investment to maintain the city’s current public housing. In New York City, most families spend over half their income just on rent, and each night about 100,000 people end up in homeless shelters. Mamdani has the huge challenge of making life more affordable in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

Mamdani also made a big promise to provide free childcare for every child from six weeks to five years old. While the plan has won support from lawmakers, officials, and some business groups, the funding remains a major question, with his campaign estimating it would require at least $6 billion each year. Another big promise from Mamdani was to make city buses free. But since the state’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority runs the system, the plan could cost around $750 million, and experts worry it might push poorer riders onto slower buses instead of faster subways.

Another big challenge for Mamdani is keeping Donald Trump from interfering in city affairs. In November, Mamdani met with Trump at the White House, and the two set aside their past conflicts to ease tensions. Though tensions have eased, Trump could still interfere. The city depends on billions in federal funding, and he could cut it if he clashes with Zohran Mamdani.
