Glenn Maxwell Announces ODI Retirement
Maxwell's last ODI match was against India in this year's ICC Men's Champions Trophy.
Glenn Maxwell, Australia's star all-rounder, has announced that he was retiring from the ODI format. The 36-year-old scored almost 4,000 runs from his 149 ODIs since making his debut against Afghanistan in 2012. Maxwell will continue to play T20s for Australia. He has the second-best ODI strike rate of all time (126.70).
Maxwell's last ODI match was against India in this year's ICC Men's Champions Trophy. "I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how the body was reacting to the conditions," he told the Final Word Podcast. "I had a good chat with (Chair of Selectors) George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward. We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him ‘I don’t think I am going to make that, it’s time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own," Maxwell added.
The right-hander, Australia’s greatest ever fielder in the modern era, has scored four ODI centuries, including a top score of 201 not out against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup. Maxwell was also a dangerous off-spinner, claiming 77 ODI wickets with a top performance of four for 40 against India in Rajkot.
